NHS ORAL SURGERY REFERRAL SERVICE

Minor Oral Surgery Service

The practice was awarded a contract in 2015 by the NHS to provide a specialist oral surgery service.
The service started in May 2015 and provides 600 appointments each year for surgery cases referred by dentists across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.

Referral Criteria

The referral criteria for the service are set by the NHS Local Area Team and should fall into the following categories:

  • Removal of buried / fractured roots or residual root fragments

  • Removal of impacted / ectopic / supernumerary tooth, including third molars

  • Removal of teeth of special difficulty (e.g. roots with abnormal morphology)

  • Minor soft tissue surgery:

  • Surgical endodontics (not including lower pre-molars or molars):

To ensure the service is as efficient as achievable, The LAT requests each referral should include an appropriate x-ray so that patients can be treated at their first visit wherever possible. There are occasions where this approach is inappropriate, for example where surgery is particularly challenging and/or where there are higher risks of complications which need to be communicated to the patient. Where intra-oral x-rays are not adequate for assessment and facilities for panoramic x-rays are not available locally, patients can be referred by practitioners to Rotherham General Hospital X-ray Department ahead of referral without cost.

The LAT also requests that a comprehensive up-to-date medical history is also included with the referral and should list all medication. A printable medical history form is available below, please ask your patient to complete one for inclusion with your referral. Patients must be suitable for treatment in primary dental care and therefore any medical conditions must be controlled.

Each referral should also indicate whether it is routine or urgent. Urgent cases are prioritised but this is subject to availability of appointments. The waiting times for the service (and other oral surgery services in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw) are provided by the LAT each month.

Treatment process

Wherever possible, treatment is undertaken at the patient’s first appointment.

NHS claim process

Practitioners should chart the surgical procedure as part of the treatment claim they are submitting. This part of the claim should be submitted as “treatment on referral.”

The treatment will generate a band 2 treatment charge which should be collected by the referring practice. If there are other band 2 or 3 items of treatment within the same course of treatment there is no additional charge and the referring practitioner should claim the UDA’s appropriate to the treatment they have provided.

Please be aware the band 2 charge applies for the referral itself. This will usually include provision of surgical treatment. In circumstances where it is deemed inadvisable to proceed, or the patient has declined further intervention the band 2 charge will still apply.

Supporting documentation

The referral documentation required for the service is available below. There are also information and advice sheets that dentists may wish to give to their patients prior to attending for treatment. Please contact us directly for any other queries not covered here prior to your referral.

Anyone deemed to be in breach of this will be refused further care.

• Hearing loop

Missed appointment/cancellation on the day policy/ arriving late for an appointment

Missed appointments waste hundreds of hours of surgery time each year, taking up valuable much needed appointments for other patients. This may be due to failure to attend without notice or by cancellation on the day of the appointment. We understand unforeseen circumstances do arise and will allow for this, however we reserve the right to refuse further treatment to any patients repeatedly missing their appointments.

We run a strict appointment only system. If you are late for an appointment we will do our best to accommodate you but in certain circumstances you may be asked to rebook if the dentist feels there is inadequate time to treat you without significantly impacting on the waiting times of patients after you.

Out of hours

For out of hours emergencies please phone NHS Direct on 111

Patient confidentiality

We take your legal right to privacy very seriously. Any information you provide us or that is kept on record will not be disclosed to anyone else without your permission. When attending for appointments or enquiries if you would like to discuss anything in a more private environment than the reception desk, please let a member of staff know and we will arrange this for you.

New patients

We welcome enquiries from new patients and are usually able to offer an assessment appointment. In periods of high demand there may be occasions when we are unable to do this to manage our waiting times. In such cases we are happy to take details and contact you when spaces become available.

Reminder service

We offer a reminder service for your routine check-up appointments. This is now done mostly by text message, however postal reminders are available if requested. In order to continue receipt of this service we request that you notify us of any mobile number or address changes at your earliest convenience.

NHS charges, responsibility of exempt patients

NHS charges are set by the government. There are 3 charge bands which are explained here:

http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/AboutNHSservices/dentists/Pages/nhs-dental-charges.aspx

When you attend we will ask you to sign a form to declare if you are exempt from charges or not. It is your responsibility to ensure this form is completed accurately and honestly. Your exemption status is checked by the NHS and if inaccurate they will issue a substantial fine.
If you are unsure if you are exempt from NHS charges you can find information here:

http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/1786.aspx?CategoryID=74

The practice accepts no liability for fines resulting from incorrectly completed declaration forms.

Complaints, compliments

and suggestions

We aim for 100% patient satisfaction but there may be times when you feel we have not met your expectations. We do not want unhappy patients and welcome your feedback and the opportunity to discuss these issues. This will allow us to address your personal concerns and improve our future service for everyone. It is our hope that we can resolve any problems informally and to your satisfaction, however more serious complaints should be directed in writing for the attention of the practice manager and a response should be received within 7 days.

We also welcome feedback on anything that you think can be implemented to improve our general service to you. Please use the suggestion box in our waiting room.

Compliments are also welcome. If you think any member of our team has excelled in their patient care for you, please let us know so due credit can be given.

Practice team and facilities

We are proud of our team at Kimberworth and promise you a warm welcome. The experience of many years as a foundation training practice has given our staff great insight into what support a foundation dentist may need for easy transition into practice life.

The practice is equipped to a very high standard. The surgeries are modern and spacious and the practice is fully computerised with Software of Excellence Exact integrated with Examine Pro digital radiography software using the Kavo Scan exam one digital imaging system. We only use quality materials and a use of rotary Ni-Ti endodontic equipment (Wave 1 or Protaper) is encouraged. Choosing the right FD placement can be an overwhelming experience so why not arrange to come and see the practice and meet the team? Our practice manager, Angela will be happy to deal with any enquiries you might have.

My time at Kimberworth Park Dental Practice during my foundation training year was fantastic. It helped me develop my skills as a newly qualified dentist and everyone was very friendly and welcoming. I would fully recommend the practice due to the great trainers, the fantastic team, the excellent facilities and the support that I continue to receive.

Claire Graham,
Kimberworth Park Foundation Dentist 2014-15

As a Foundation Dentistry Training practice Kimberworth Park excels on all fronts. The staff are friendly and welcoming, the equipment available is excellent and with multiple trainers there is always plenty of experience on hand.

I thoroughly enjoyed my FD year at KPDP, you are given full clinical autonomy to provide the dentistry you feel patients require in the knowledge you have a fantastic support network to advise you if you need.

Joe Nightingale,
Kimberworth Park Foundation Dentist 2015-16

I did my foundation year with Kimberworth Park Dental Practice in 2015-16 and it was a very enjoyable year! All the staff are friendly and will always help if needed. I had the opportunity to experience other specialties including orthodontics and oral surgery, however there was lots of clinical work to get on with too with cases covering a wide variety of disciplines. This helped me to become a more independent and well-rounded dentist than when I first started and I would love to do it all again if I could!

Zenab Aslam,
Kimberworth Park Foundation Dentist 2015-16

Kimberworth Park Dental Practice is a brilliant place to do dental foundation training. The team are knowledgeable, up to date and friendly. I had the chance to improve my skills in a supportive environment, with approachable trainers using the latest techniques and equipment.

Jodie Bustin,
Kimberworth Park Foundation Dentist 2010-11

As a Foundation Training practice Kimberworth Park is fantastic. Throughout my year I felt supported enough to take on multiple complex treatments and really push myself to be a better dentist. From tooth wear cases to complex crown and bridge work to re-RCT using a microscope, I was able to improve my clinical ability in a safe environment. The trainers are incredibly knowledgeable with post-graduate qualifications and its great having an on-site oral surgeon specialist to help with any tricky extractions! The environment at the practice is really friendly with many social events throughout the year and I cannot think of a better place to spend your FD year.
I loved it so much I have stayed on as a clinician!.
